HeyGen Free Plan Limits: What You Can Export Before Paying
HeyGen free plan limits, checked on HeyGen's own pages: videos per month, length, watermark and resolution, plus where its pages disagree and what to test.
Short answer: the HeyGen free plan limits, as HeyGen's own pricing page listed them on September 27, 2026, are 3 videos per month, each up to 1 minute long, with a HeyGen watermark, because watermark removal is a paid feature. The same page lists access to Avatar IV, over 500 stock video avatars and one custom video avatar. The free plan is fine for judging quality. It is not built for regular publishing. One catch: HeyGen's own pages do not agree on export resolution or on how many free videos you get, so check inside your own account before you plan around a number.
Every figure below is dated and sourced to HeyGen's own pages, not a roundup. Free tiers in this category change often, so treat this as a snapshot and recheck before you rely on it.

Where HeyGen's own pages disagree
This is the part most articles about the free plan skip. Third-party write-ups often give one confident number, and they do not always match each other. The more useful finding is that HeyGen's own pages did not fully match on the day we read them.
Number of free videos. The pricing page said 3 videos per month. HeyGen's Help Center article on credit-based pricing plans, read on September 27, 2026, described the free allowance as one to three free videos, depending on your region. So depending on where you sign up, you may get fewer than three.
Resolution. The pricing page comparison listed Free as "Up to 1080P," and the HeyGen FAQ page, read the same day, described the free tier as "3 videos/mo up to 1 min, 1080p." The Help Center article listed a "720p video sharing link" among the free plan's features. Those could both be true if a shared link plays at a lower resolution than a download, but the pages do not say so.
Voice cloning. The pricing page did not list voice cloning for Free, while the Help Center article listed "1 voice clone" under the free plan.
We are not in a position to say which page is current, and we have not run the free plan ourselves. The practical advice is simple: the number shown inside your own HeyGen account is the one that applies to you. Check it before you script three videos.
What "3 videos, 1 minute each" actually gets you
Plan around the limits, not around the headline.
- About three minutes of finished video a month, at most. If your region gets fewer free videos, it is less.
- Short scripts only. At a normal speaking pace, a one-minute cap fits a short explainer, a product intro or a test clip. Anything longer has to be cut into parts, and each part uses one of your monthly videos.
- Every export carries the watermark. That is fine for testing. It is usually not fine for a client, a course or your main channel.
- Retakes may cost you. If a render comes out wrong and you generate it again, expect that to count as another video. With only a handful, one bad script can use up a large share of your month.
That is why the free plan works best as an evaluation tool. Use it to answer one question: does this avatar look and sound good enough, for my kind of video, that I would put my name on it?
Limits that move without a plan change
HeyGen's Help Center article on dynamic and non-dynamic limits, read on September 27, 2026, says "dynamic limits shift based on system performance and efficiency, while non-dynamic limits are set at the plan level." It names "processing queue, videos per day, fair usage/abuse limits" as dynamic, and avatar slots as non-dynamic.
In plain terms: your monthly video count and avatar slots are fixed by your plan, but how fast your video processes and how many you can make in a day can change with demand. On a free plan with "standard video processing," expect that a render may wait in a queue, and do not schedule a free-plan video against a tight deadline.
How to get the most out of the free plan
Since every free video counts, prepare before you press generate.
- Decide what you are testing. Pick the one format you would actually publish, such as a 45 second explainer, and test that. Not a random demo.
- Write and time the script first. Read it aloud with a timer. If it runs past a minute, cut it before you render, not after.
- Use a stock avatar for the first test. You get one custom video avatar slot. Save it until you know the tool suits you. Making a custom avatar of yourself also means following HeyGen's consent step.
- Watch the result on a phone and on a laptop. Lip sync, hands and eye movement can look different at different sizes.
- Write down what you would need to change. That list, not the watermark, is what tells you whether paying is worth it.
If the output is not good enough on a clip you would really publish, a paid plan will not fix that. Paid plans add length, remove the watermark and add features, but they do not change whether an avatar suits your audience. For some videos, other kinds of footage do the job better, which we look at in AI video vs stock footage.
Before you publish anything made on the free plan
Two things apply whether you pay or not.
The watermark is part of a free export. Upgrading later does not change a file you already downloaded, because a watermark is rendered into the video. If you think you might want a clean version, keep the project in your account so you can try exporting it again after upgrading, rather than keeping only the watermarked file.
Platform rules still apply. A realistic avatar video may need a disclosure on YouTube. Read how YouTube's synthetic content disclosure works before posting avatar content there. And if your avatar is based on a real person, the tool's consent rules and the law where you are come into play, whether or not you paid.
When the free plan stops making sense
The free plan has done its job once you know the answer to "is this good enough for my videos?" At that point:
- If you need longer videos, no watermark, or more than a few a month, you are looking at a paid plan. Compare the current plans on HeyGen's pricing page on the day you decide, since features and prices move.
- If the output was not good enough, stop there. More minutes of something you would not publish is not a bargain.
- If you are unsure, run one more free test next month with a different script and avatar before paying.
Paying for a tool you have only half tested is a common way to end up with a subscription you do not use. Our broader guide to AI tools that are actually worth your time covers how to judge that before you commit.
